Since opening in 2016, The Block Co. has become one of Burlington's most unique gathering places, an intimate, independent space with a personality all its own.
Founder Troy Smith set out to create what he called a "social speak-easy," somewhere that felt less like a traditional venue and more like hanging out at a friend's really cool house.
Nearly a decade later, that spirit is still very much alive.
Tucked inside is The Edison Room, an intimate, speakeasy-style live music venue that has become a staple of Burlington's music scene. SBREAD started with two people, one family, and a really good loaf of bread. My wife, Chiara, built The BKR around her love of baking and exceptional sourdough. I was the one standing beside her, eating it and constantly asking, "What else could we do with this?" SBREAD became our answer.
We took the sandwich apart and made the things we love most about food the stars: great bread, bold spreads, quality ingredients and flavours inspired by kitchens around the world. Then we let you decide how to put it all back together. Rip & dip. Open face. Closed face. There's no wrong way to SBREAD.
We're a husband-and-wife team raising our family here in Burlington, and we wanted to build the kind of place we'd want in our own neighbourhood: small, independent, welcoming, a little unexpected and never too serious. That's why our menu has names like Salsa Hayek and Tzatziki Minaj. It's why we're always experimenting with something new.
And it's why, underneath all the fun, we're obsessive about what actually matters — fresh sourdough, thoughtful ingredients, globally inspired flavours and food made with care. The BKR created the bread. SBREAD became a whole new way to experience it. We're serious about the food. We just don't think food has to take itself so seriously.
